Greenport Students visit Broadway

On May 2nd over 50 of Greenport High School students participated in a full 360 degree Broadway experience.
The feelings of empowerment, enrichment, and memories created are all abuzz in our halls. Many of our students shared that they had not had this type of opportunity presented to them before. Since its Broadway debut, the Tony-Award winning Best Musical Kinky Boots has been working with the TDF STAGE DOORS to give young people opportunities to learn about the theater.

Coupled with the trip, our students participated in workshops lead by a teaching a professional artist.  These workshops were based on the understanding that future audiences are built by engaging students, first-hand, in the vital and exciting activity of the creative process, as well as providing opportunities to see live performances of great theater. The workshops actively engaged our students  in inquiry, creativity and community.

“I’ve never been to a broadway show before, and this whole experience has been so great. I know there is more than what we see on the stage,” says Katerine, grade 8.

Our workshops centered around the theme  in Kinky Boots “you can change the world when you change your mind”. This play  has very positive messages about being who you are, self acceptance, and accepting others for who they are.  Our young people were also inspired they  made a pledge to stand for and protect the values of inclusion, participation, and compassion for everyone – regardless of race, class, religion, country of origin, immigration status, (dis)ability, age, gender identity, or sexual orientation.

“We  can creatively be brave in and outside our classes.  We can empower, enlighten and serve as light in our community.” said S. Colfer, grade 12.
