John Wright – Rotary Student of the Month

John Wright is being recognized as the Rotary’s “Student of the Month” for April. Throughout John’s school years at Greenport, he has participated in NJROTC since Freshman year, and has expressed that he has “loved every moment of it”. He has played a part in virtually everything the program has had to offer, including very selective programs such as the National Society of Blackjacks, an honor society of JROTC cadets, and Leadership Academy, a two week training camp in Newport, Rhode Island on the basics of how to be a leader and to excel in not only JROTC, but in other ventures as well. In addition, John has been a strong member of Varsity Drill Teams, such as Unarmed and Armed Drill, Armed Exhibition, and other events, earning trophies in regional competitions across the northeast with his fellow cadets in Southold and Mattituck, as well as honorably being ranked as the highest ranking cadet in Greenport NJROTC as the Company Commander.

Among these astounding accomplishments, John devotes most of his time to community service, with over 250 hours accumulated since Freshman year, not only making memories with the community, but with friends that he’s met throughout the years. At Greenport, John continues to impress. He has been a writer for the school newspaper (The Greenport Quill) for the past 3 years, starting as a writer in his sophomore year, writing articles based on music reviews, to politics, and news relevant to Greenport. With this experience he became the President and Editor-in-Chief of the school newspaper. John has been a member of Model United Nations since Sophomore year, and also served as Class Secretary his Junior Year, even being a spokesperson for our school during a meeting with Senator LaValle on gun control hosted in Mattituck High School. John is the President of the National Honor Society, and a member of the Spanish Honor Society.

Furthermore, he attended New York American Legion Boys State, a week long program in SUNY Morrisville, where he learned how our state government is run and organized, alongside the mentorship of a U.S. Marine. John is a 3 Year Varsity Spring Track Athlete, participating primarily in throwing events (discus and shotput) while also experimenting in long distance events. You could also catch John at our Porters Basketball games as he was cameraman for the living streaming of the games. Academically, he studies in AP classes, earning Academic Excellence awards in Global History 2 and AP US History, and currently sits as 10th in the class with a 90.6 GPA.

After receiving an Army ROTC Scholarship, John will be attending Clemson University located in South Carolina where he will be majoring in Computer Science, and upon graduating college he wishes to become an officer in the United States Army
