University of Maine University Singers to begin Spring Tour

The University of Maine Singers annual Spring Tour, from March 7 to March 12, will take them to four states with performances at high schools, churches, and a community college.  Evening concerts begin on Monday, March 7 at Winnisquam Regional High School in Tilton, NH; and continue on Tuesday, March 8 at the James and Betty Hall Theatre/Dutchess Hall on the campus of Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, NY; Thursday, March 10 at Orient Congregational Church in Orient, NY; and Friday, March 11 at Falmouth High School in Falmouth, MA.  The final concert of the tour is Saturday, March 12 at Garland Auditorium at Thornton Academy in Saco, ME.  All evening performances begin at 7:30pm except the Saco concert that begins at 7pm.Concerts are free and open to the public.

Francis John Vogt, Director of Choral Activities at the University of Maine and conductor of the University Singers, explains the importance of the annual spring tour: “It is a wonderful opportunity to spread the word around the Northeast about the great things happening here at the School of Performing Arts.  But, because the 66-voiced choir is comprised of both music majors and students in other disciplines, it is a great recruitment tool for the entire University.  My favorite aspect of the tour, though, is getting to reconnect with former students and alumni, many of whom host us on our various stops.”

The music Vogt has selected for this year’s tour will also be performed by the Singers in Europe this spring.  The group will be travelling in Ireland and England from May 23 to June 4, and will sing in several notable venues including Ely Cathedral in Cambridgeshire, and Southwark Cathedral in London.  “We’ve put a program together of primarily American music by composers as diverse as William Billings, John Knowles Paine, Samuel Barber, and Stephen Sondheim.  In addition we will also perform motets by the great English Renaissance composer William Byrd and the fantastic contemporary British composer Tarik O’Regan.”
